Cape Town – "Thugs" petrol bombed 16 houses in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village and damaged 100 more, the City of Cape Town said on Friday.

The corrugated iron structures were part of

the housing units in the Sir Lowry’s Pass Village Incremental Development Area, meant for community members waiting for houses.

Mayoral committee member for human settlements, Benedicta van Minnen, said 16 units were damaged beyond repair.

One hundred more were damaged when their doors were kicked in and the windows broken, she said on Thursday.

This was an act of retaliation after the City tried to stop community members, who were not beneficiaries, from illegally moving in on Thursday, she said.

On Wednesday, scores of people living in an informal settlement destroyed government houses that were under construction in Sir Lowry's Pass Village.

The rampage continued on Thursday.

"This has dire consequences for the development project because identified beneficiaries will now have to wait for repairs to the units to take place, which could take some time. They will not be able to take up their rightful opportunities immediately," Van Minnen said.

Describing the perpetrators as "thugs", Van Minnen said the damage was likely to total hundreds of thousands of rand.

"It is heartbreaking, exasperating and completely unacceptable, she said.

Police were investigating, the City said.

Last year, disgruntled community members rejected the houses in a protest that turned violent.

Complaints included the size of the structures, which measure 6m x 4m.
