Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal private security company owner shotand wounded two armed robbers moments after they allegedly held up a mother anddaughter in their Durban home on Thursday.

head Prem Balram said he receiveda call from a resident in Himalaya Drive, Verulam, who told him he suspectedhis 65-year-old mother and 17-year-old daughter were in the middle of an armedrobbery at their home.

"He said his daughter had spoken to himuncharacteristically softly. I went to the home and as I got to the property, Inoticed a car coming out from the back with a male driver. He immediately shotabout 10 rounds at me."

He returned fire, shooting through his windscreen andhitting the driver in the face and chest.

"He ran up a nearby bank and collapsed. A secondsuspect in the back seat opened fire at me, firing around 25 rounds.

"I shot the car 35 times. The second suspect sustainedinjuries and was apprehended, together with a third suspect. The items thatwere stolen have been recovered. The car they used was stolen in a hijacking inNewlands earlier this month."

Balram said the man shot in the face was in a criticalcondition in hospital.
