Bloemfontien An elderly man was forcefully removed from the University of the Free State campus by protesters after he tried to engage with students.

"I came to campus to honour CR

Swart and try to remove the statue from where it was left by the protesting students," Wikus Botha said.

Campus security intervened while protesters chanted and shouted: "Hey, hey". Housing and residence affairs director Quinton Koetaan kept a close eye on the incident.

Botha managed to flee from the crowd.

Protesters defaced the statue at the university on Tuesday morning. Students burned tyres and used hammers and rocks to topple the statue.

The vandalised statue of a late politician Charles Robberts Swart was left lying in a pond in front of the law faculty at the university by afternoon, after a day of protests.

"We can't just toyi-toyi, we have to engage one another. I am sad because it is typical what is happening in this country and I could not stand watching CR Swart lying there," Botha said.

The protesters spray painted the words "Lillian Ngoyi House" on the walls of women's residence, Wag 'n Bietjie.

Botha said he only wanted to engage with students, but they had chased him away.

On Monday, a small group of protesters disrupted a Varsity Cup rugby match at Shimla Park s\Stadium, which culminated in the mass brawl between them and spectators.
