Durban – An Altech Netstar technician, who was attacked by an ostrich while conducting routine maintenance in Harrismith on Tuesday morning, has been discharged from hospital.

Property manager of the Bergview

Complex Engen 1 Stop in Harrismith in the Free State, Irma Maritz, said she was informed about the incident on Tuesday afternoon.

"I went to see him in hospital after I heard what had happened and he told me that he had asked his manager who he had to get permission from to access the property."

His manager told him there was no need to get permission and he entered the property, Maritz said, adding that she was told the worker had walked on to the private property which had goats, donkeys and ostriches. He was attacked by an ostrich.

"The animals are within an enclosed area. This has never happened before. I went and apologised to the man and asked him what had happened."

Maritz said the man, who had a cut on his chin, had been stitched and released from Bethlehem Mediclinic on Wednesday morning.

The technician was not immediately available for comment, but Altech Netstar spokesperson Shona Minards confirmed that two of the company’s radio frequency technicians had been involved in the incident.

"The incident took place in the area surrounding the installation and paramedics based at the complex treated one technician after the incident," said Minards.
