Cape Town – Cleaning staff made their way to five buildings on UCT’s upper campus after sewage was thrown onto the property in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

In a statement,

the University of Cape Town said that small groups of people entered the Robert Leslie Social Science, Robert Leslie Commerce, Menzies, Beattie and Chemical Engineering buildings and threw sewage into them.

“It is regrettable that this action of a few people is putting an extra burden on cleaning and security staff as well as creating a health hazard for anyone who enters these buildings,” the university’s spokesperson Kylie Hatton said in a statement.

Campus security and traffic officers are now monitoring all entrances to UCT to ensure safe access for students and staff members.

At the start of the Rhodes Must Fall campaign last year, UCT student Chumani Maxwele made headlines when he threw faeces on the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the foot of the Jameson Hall steps. After weeks of debate and protest, the statue was removed.

Maxwele told News24 that he had no idea who was behind the latest stink as he was not on campus.
