Pietermaritzburg Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has urged leaders of political parties to rise above party interests and put KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa first.

Zwelithini delivered the keynote address to mark

the official opening of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday. The Zulu monarch said KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa faced challenges that could be addressed by courageous leadership.

"There comes a time when family members have to rise above their differences and consider what is in the interest of the family and forge a way ahead. The success of the family rests upon each member," said the king.

Zwelithini acknowledged political parties had different viewpoints, but stressed that all party members should remember what was important for the province and country.

"We need courageous leaders, regardless of their racial and political make up, who can rise above personal interests and help us in navigating the current challenges," he said.

Lack of tolerance

He said there had been instances when party leaders displayed lack of tolerance and differing viewpoints and warned that if leaders continued with such attitudes, people would copy their example, a development he said would plunge communities into chaos.

The monarch also noted the rising tensions between communities and police, saying this reflected deep-seated problems, both in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa.

Zwelithini said the recent racial spats were a sore point that pained him and called on leaders to work at ensuring South Africa did not go back to the days of racial tensions.

"It is not nice to witness incidents that remind us of the days of apartheid. What all of us should accept is that we cannot develop if we do not forgive one another and allow bygones to be bygones."

This year marks 200years since the Zulu nation was founded and 45 years since Zwelithini assumed the throne in 1971. A string of activities to mark the celebrations were to be announced at a later stage.
