Durban – The family of Durban University of Technology student Lindelani Myeza, who committed suicide last week, has confirmed that he did have funding for his tuition fees.

The family, who

was still reeling in shock, on Friday also said it believed there was more to his death.

"He would never kill himself, no matter what," said Myeza’s brother Sibonelo, 24.

The 21-year-old student from Mondlo in Vryheid reportedly plunged to his death on Friday, February 12, allegedly after being denied National Financial Aid Scheme assistance.

Myeza, who was living in the Persada Residence in Berea, Durban, fell from the 6th floor of the building.

He was a first-year student in the University’s Management Sciences Faculty and had already entered residence on February 9, 2016.

After investigating, both the Higher Education Department and NSFAS this week confirmed that Myeza had applied for funding and qualified based on the NSFAS Means Test.

He was allowed to register for the 2016 academic year, NSFAS said in a statement.

His brother said when Myeza left home two weeks ago he already knew he had secured funding from NSFAS.

"He was very excited because they had already told us that he had secured funding. They told us that they would wait for his first term results and take it from there."

'It's a lie'

Myeza blamed students for peddling false information about the student funding.

"It’s a lie. The NSFAS story was made up by some of the students; we knew that he had funding."

Myeza said one thing he was sure of was that his brother was not suicidal.

"The matter is being investigated, but I can tell you that something does not make sense. He did not commit suicide, something happened between him and some students that night."

He said his brother, who was very close to him, had registered for a course in retail management.

"My brother was not easily angered. He was a good communicator and only reacted when provoked."

Myeza said even if his brother was under the influence of alcohol he would not take his own life.

"We are still very confused by what happened and we were further traumatised by the lies about the funding."

When asked if his brother had enemies, he said: "It sounds like he had upset a few people. But he was not a violent person. The story is just unbelievable, but the police are investigating what happened and we hope that they will get to the bottom of this.”

Myeza was expected to be buried on Saturday.
