Cape Town - The ANC expressed disappointment at opposition MPs' behaviour during Tuesday's State of the Nation Address debate and accused them of abusing democracy and parliamentary rules.

"Instead of reflecting substantively

on the president’s important progress report and crucial government priorities for this financial year, some of the parties have indulged in empty electioneering rhetoric, personal attacks, name-calling, and abusive un-parliamentary language," ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

Parliamentary debates were historically a festival of ideas and an exchange of superior, rational arguments on key issues, he said.

However, since the EFF's arrival in 2014, there had been attention-seeking disruptions, profane posturing, and conduct that was disrespectful to institution, MPs, and the public.

Kodwa accused opposition MPs of not having the interest of the country at heart.

"They deny the voices of the constituencies they claim to represent an opportunity to be heard in Parliament."

Earlier, opposition parties called on Zuma to step down, citing what they said was his poor decision making and messy personal life, which some said had embarrassed the country.
