Cape Town - The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) was in charge of education, not Education Minister Angie Motshekga, said DA MP Gavin Davis in Parliament on Tuesday during the debate on

President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address.

In KwaZulu-Natal's Ugu district there was no teaching for seven months, he said. And at Bhekisizwe High School in the province, teachers started their holidays two weeks ahead of break-up day and come back two weeks after schools reopened - and they got away with it, Davis told the House.

He said teachers on the ground had said that organised labour had taken over.

"There are many hard-working and dedicated teachers in the country, but there are too many teachers who can't teach and too many teachers who won't teach."

They are never held to account because they belong to Sadtu, and Sadtu is an alliance partner of the majority party, the ANC, he said.

Sadtu had "captured" six of the nine provincial governments and allegedly ran a protection racket for under-performing teachers who were members. For Sadtu bosses, loyalty to the union came over loyalty to children, Davis claimed.

He said to Zuma should break his silence and put the children of South Africa first.
