Cape Town – The challenges facing the country leave no room for partisan political posturing and bickering.

Methodist Church of Southern Africa leader Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa said on Monday all parties needed

to work together to tackle problems including the economy, drought, lack of service delivery, and higher education funding.

In a post “State of the Nation Address” analysis, Siwa said a national dialogue and consensus around these matters was needed.

“We urge all political parties to consider suspending their belligerent ideologies and together consolidate their mandates in order to make significant contributions that are in the best interests of the country.”

He urged people to pray and hold leaders accountable.

“The time is ripe for the ANC as the ruling party to show the electorate that they can lead and put the interests of the country before party affiliation.”

Siwa said it was fitting for President Jacob Zuma to pay back a portion of the money spent on non-security upgrades to his Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, homestead.

This would be a tangible proof that the highest office in the land respected the pillars of democracy.

“The presidency needs to distance itself from the spectre of rampant corruption and political patronage hanging over the current administration, giving the impression of a duel between an increasingly distant political class and a gradually disenfranchised and frustrated populace.”

Siwa said Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s remedial actions on Nkandla could have been carried out timeously and responsibly, saving the country substantial taxpayers’ money in ill-advised, ego-driven litigation battles.

Earlier this month, Zuma proposed that he repay a sum to be determined by the Auditor-General and the minister of finance.

Last week, the Constitutional Court heard argument on the matter and reserved judgment.
